Shamanism (SHAH-man or SHAY-man for men and SHAY-man-ness for women) is an ancient healing tradition and a way of life that involves a practitioner reaching altered states of consciousness. While in this altered state of consciousness the shaman travels to the upper and lower worlds where they connect with nature and all of creation and interact with the spirit world. Shamans and shamanesses channel these energies in order to diagnose and facilitate healing in the physical world. Shamans help people reconnect with their inner healer on the spiritual plane to enable the person to heal themselves from within mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Shamanistic traditions have been with us since prehistoric times and have existed on all inhabited continents. Shamanism focuses on our connection to nature and the promotion of the well being of all creation. The word shaman originates from the language of the Tungus tribe in Siberia. This word refers to a person who makes journeys to nonordinary reality in an altered state of consciousness for the purpose of helping individuals and whole communities alike.
